Jesse is finding out that middle school is tough, especially when you’re the shy, quiet type. But she has a secret. For Jesse, music becomes magic. When she’s in her groove, she can see the rhythm, feel the beats, and the words and rhymes come into her head like the muse is standing over her shoulder. The magic and the music have been her secret, the kind of thing a little girl does alone in her room, but now she aches to share it.

When a school assignment asks her to answer the question, “Who Am I?”, Jesse is torn. She desperately wants to show everyone her gift. But Jesse’s realizing that not everyone wants her to be true to herself. Her harried, loving dad wants her to be his little girl. Her dance teacher wants her to be like all the other proper ballerinas. And at school, the pressure to conform, to hide her light and pretend she’s like everyone else, has never been greater.

Just as she’s about to buckle under the pressure, Jesse sets out on an urban odyssey, accompanied by her “magic.” It leads her to where she’s meant to be, a safe space for who she’s meant to be. She finds the strength to choose being true to herself over fitting in. She finds the strength to follow her voice.
